What is a study permit?

The permit is a document we IRCC issues that allows international students to study in Canada. 

Remember that your study permit is not a visa. It doesn’t let you enter Canada. 

You may also need to apply for a visitor visa. 

Study permit fee and biometrics

  • CAD 150 - Study permit fee
  • CAD $85- Biometrics

Study permit processing time

Study permit application outside Canada might take up to 12 weeks or more, and  Processing times will vary based on the following:

  • the type of application submitted
  • if the application is complete
  • how easily can IRCC can verify your information
  • how long do you take to respond to any requests or concerns from IRCC
  • other factors

This processing time (12 WEEKS) does not include the following:

  • the time it takes to send an application between a visa application centre (VAC) and our office
  • the time you need to give your biometrics

Eligibility requirements

You might come to Canada if you meet the following criteria:

  1. Qualified as a fully vaccinated traveller 
  2. Under 18 students, you don't have to be fully vaccinated. However, you do need to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) with an approved COVID-19 readiness plan.
  3. You must be enrolled in a DLI.
  4. Conduct a criminal record and get a police certificate (if required)
  5. Get a medical exam if required 
  6. Proof you will leave Canada when your study permit expires 
  7. You  need to prove you have enough money to pay for the following:
    • Tuition fees
    • Living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and
    • Return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada

International student responsibilities

During your studies in Canada, you must:

  • Make progress toward completing your program
  • Respect any conditions listed on your study permit and
  • Stop studying if you no longer meet the requirements
  • Always maintain full-time student status
  • One academic break per year

Your school must send you a letter of acceptance. Include the original or electronic copy of your LOA.


Conditional acceptance and prerequisite courses

If you’ve been conditionally accepted, you must take prerequisite courses. For example, these might be English as a second language or French as a dual language course. You must complete these before you can start your main study program.

If this is the case, we’ll only issue your study permit for the length of those courses plus one year. Once accepted into your main program, you’ll need to apply for a new student permit to extend your stay as a student.

You need to provide a valid passport or travel document or your study permit, you and each family member who comes with you.

  • Online applicants: Upload a copy of the information page of your passport when you apply online.
    • If you’re approved, you must then send us your original passport.
    • Two recent passport-size photos
    • The person's name and date of birth should be written on the back of each photo.

You must prove that you can support yourself and the family members who come with you while you are in Canada. You can verify your funds with the following:

  • Proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, if you've transferred money to Canada
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution
  • Evidence of a student or education loan 
  • You need to provide bank statements for the past four month
  • Proof you paid tuition and housing fees
  • Support letter from the person or school giving you money

This document helps the visa officer to understand you and your goals. It needs to contain:

  • why do you want to study in Canada and what purpose of the program
  • Highlight that you understand your responsibilities as a student.
  • Make sure to be specific about the program and your objective by complementing your education.

Check the visa office instructions for your country or region for local requirements.

If you aren't currently in your home country, you may have to prove your immigration status in the country you apply from.


How to apply

You must apply for a study permit before you come to Canada. When you use, you should submit the following:

  • Letter of acceptance from the institution you’ll be attending
    • All documents prove you qualify as a fully vaccinated traveller unless you are under 18.
  • as many of the documents needed for a complete application as possible
    • We won’t be able to finalize your study permit until you’ve submitted a full application.
    • Waiting to submit documents will cause delays in processing.
  • a letter of explanation 
  • Proof of funds

Start by selecting where you are you applying. It could be from inside or outside Canada.

 You need to sign in to your IRCC secure account, start an application, submit and pay for your application, get messages related to your application, check the status of your application and update your information.

to access our immigration and citizenship online services, you need to create a secure IRCC account; There are 2 ways you can register:

  1. Register with a GCKey
  2. Register with a Sign-In Partner

Make sure the application forms are filled out and submitted correctly; all the information must be true and will be  subject to verification

GCKey lets you securely access the Government of Canada’s online services.

To register

  1. Click Register with a GCKey below.
  2. Click Sign Up.
  3. Read the Terms and Conditions of Use and click I Accept.
  4. Create a username. Click Continue.
  5. Create a password. Click Continue.
  6. Create your security questions and responses. Click Continue.
  7. Click Continue to get to the Sign Up Complete page.
  8. Read the Terms and Conditions. Click I Accept.
  9. Enter your information and follow the steps to create your account.
